Article from visions about LGBT families of choice

Family are the first to notice. My first contact with the mental health system occurred one evening when a friend of my wife’s and mine—we’ll call her Linda—came over for dinner. Linda seemed a bit off. Anxious and awkward, she told us that people at her workplace were invading her mind to control a...

Someone I love has been diagnosed with schizophrenia. How can I help?

How we can or should help may seem fairly obvious when a loved one experiences a physical health problem, but many people say they’re not sure how to best help when a loved one experiences a mental illness like schizophrenia. Here are som...

What’s the difference between dissociative identity disorder (multiple personality disorder) and schizophrenia?

Sometimes, people confuse dissociative identity disorder, formerly known as multiple personality disorder, and schizophrenia. Schizophrenia does mean “split mind,” but the name was meant to describe the ‘split’ from reality that you experience during an episode of psychosis, as well as changes in th...

I’m worried about my child or teenager. Where can I find help?

It can be hard to figure out what to do if you’re concerned about a young person in your family. Many people start by talking with their family doctor. If you don’t have a family doctor, you can find a doctor through the College of Physicians and Surgeons of BC. You can also visit a walk-in clinic. ...

What to do when someone you love has an eating disorder

"It is not easy to watch your child do damage to their health - especially when the solution appears, at least on the outside, to be simple. Eating disorders are not simple. They are not only about food or weight. So what can you do when you suspect that your child may have an eating disorder?...

Re: Legal question regarding inheritance

Hi Andrew,
I replied to your other post about this, so I suggest having a look there too. If you need legal advice but the estate can't afford a lawyer, I suggest the UBC legal clinic: http://www.lslap.bc.ca/ which provides free legal advice to people who can't afford it.

Sincerely,
Sophia

Re: Wife's substance use

Hi Reunion, You are right, it is completely unfair for family and friends to assume you have the ability to prevent your wife from using pot. I'm sorry they aren't more supportive. So it sounds like your wife has no insight into her schizophrenia, a symptom which is also caused anosognosia. I'm goin...

Re: Legal question regarding inheritance

I'm so sorry for your loss. I'm certain you are going to need to consult a lawyer on this. I'm assuming your mother did not leave the property in trust already or put conditions on it? Here is some information that might be helpful around how people set up trusts, particularly the list of lawyers at...
