Re: Evidence based research that questions the necessity for

I am posting a link to a series of studies that are used to argue against immediate and high doses of antipsychotic medication. These began in the 60's and run up until quite recently. The varying stances on mental illness, severity, duration and prognosis cannot be adequately described in a single ...

Re: Evidence based research that questions the necessity for

There is the potential to be able to talk about these things with civilty and compassion which is what I have appreciated about our prior contacts Sophia. When power to diagnose and make judgements as to a person's competency in the eyes of society and the law are concerned, I will always probably s...

Thankyou Sophia! I went to the link you provided and found the posted document with all the recommendations. Greatly appreciated that information! Ross Allan Inquest and implications for treatment

I am wondering why all the links provided with the information on the BCSS website about Ross Allan are not available or have changed. Ross Allan's suicide was an unnecesary tragedy, and my heartfelt wishes and condolences go out to all who have been affected. Following the inquest, I have not been ...

Re: hands are tied

Wow! I laugh and cry when I read the community building that is going on here....remember the accomplishments of Chuck Cadman MP whose son Jesse was murdered at a bus stop in Surrey BC. Parent's can make monumental differences when they stand up and fight back, or for more just laws. There are other...

Re: hands are tied

Sure hope I read all the posts so this is clear! It can feel so frustrating and heartbreaking to try to help our loved one when they do not seem to be getting the help they need, or getting better.BCSS is a good group for realtime support and strategies to help us live our own life as fully as we ca...

Re: If You Had A Magical Wand! What Things Would You Change?

Ihave been thinking myself about the positive effects an involved and relationally rich community context can provide. I would also like to point out that because of the family members in my life who live with 'mental illness' and take medication or do not, I have realized that I am more patient, mo...

Re: About taking breaks from caregiving

Sounds like we make each other laugh and grin.....even maniacally if that's where it is at! Very cool Carrie-Anne! Today. I did something unprecedented and difficult...I made my own mind up to leave and go to a friend's when my actions were misinterpreted and my repeated corrective statements were n...

Re: About taking breaks from caregiving

I am back from visiting my family and have reconnected with extended family membersI have hardly heard from, let alone spent time with in almost 20 years.very good to see where I come from and experience the ease with which I can slide back into familiarity with them. They feel and act like family.....

Re: About taking breaks from caregiving

It can be really difficilt to even think about taking a break.....even if one is offered! There can be such a strong investment (as in my situation) in the caretaking role that nothing else makes it through the tunnel vision that can develop. Kind of like running a marathon without any support... I ...

Re: Privacy Here

Hi Sophia and anyone else who reads this post looking for a secure and accepting venue in which to explore how to live with how we are affected by our loved ones and their 'illness'. My experience in living has led me to distrust institutional sources of support, and yet I am posting here trying to ...

Re: You are welcome here!

Hi Sophia! This was a great post to read...precisely because of the isolation that comes with living with the effects of mental illness oneself or as a partner or friend. The homophobia aspect of things in my life is not an active conscious distress. Instead, it runs deep benath the surface and make...
